Air France Flight 007, a chartered Boeing 707, catches fire after overshooting the runway on takeoff, killing all but two of the 130 passengers and crew on board; among the fatalities are many of the civic and cultural leaders of Atlanta, Georgia; it is the worst single-aircraft accident to that date.
